We Need Therapy

Hello, hey, hi! Did you know that according to the CDC non-Hispanic black adults made up the smallest portion of recipients of therapy in 2018-2020? However, this same group made up the most significant percentage of people treated in emergency rooms for visits related to mental health disorders. We need therapy yall. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/products/databriefs/db380.htm

Each month I ramble about my foolishness and yall tell me I’m brave and strong. That feels really good but that is not the point. I attempt vulnerability in hopes that the next person attempts the same. My goal is to chisel away at the stigma surrounding mental health in the African American community. My hope is that by sharing openly and honestly we can change the mindset of our people and finally start to advocate for the needs of the community. This humble blog may not change the world but I will not stop until I’ve changed some hearts.

One of the best things that has happened since I started is the discovery of amazing new-to-me resources and like-minded people that are willing to help. One being Mr. Malcolm Jenkins. He reached out to me about adding some guides to my RESOURCES page and I’m so glad he did! Here’s how he describes them:

An essential element of being anti-racist is providing access to culturally competent mental health care. These guides do a great job of addressing this key issue for People of Color *and* their allies:

  • Live Another Day - Live Another Day believes in equal access to life-saving mental health and substance use resources. This website provides extensive information on the best resources available.

  • Detox Local - An excellent resource that features abundant information including mental health and substance use resources specifically for the AAPI (American Asian and Pacific Islander) community.

Yall! I’ve been busy, busy. I’m working on a book and I’m pretty excited about it. I won’t give too much away but I could really use your help. Please consider submitting the anonymous survey linked in the picture above. I would greatly appreciate it. Til next month…

Creatively yours,

Ms. Bee Happy, Healthy, Healing
